“You can’t think your way into acting better, but you can act your way into thinking better.”

Hey Rollers,

Motivation is the most overrated fuel on earth. It rarely shows up when you need it, but it loves to arrive after you’ve already started moving.

A couple of weeks back, I wrote about the danger of saying yes to things just because you can.
This week is about the opposite problem, when you’ve already said yes, but you’re waiting to “feel like it” before acting.

The reality: it’s what you do, not how you feel, that moves the needle.

You can act your way into feeling the way you want to feel. But trying to feel your way into acting? That’s like trying to order an Uber without an internet connection – you can stare at the app all you want, but you’re not going anywhere.

Feelings are unreliable starters, but they’re incredible amplifiers. Which means the fastest way to create the energy, joy, and momentum you’re craving is to move first, then let the feeling catch up.

I was reminded of this yesterday morning.

I found myself at a 90th birthday celebration that kicked off at sunrise… as a silent disco.
Now, dancing (especially sober) is not my thing. Rain was forecast, I didn’t think I’d know anyone, and I considered bailing more than once.

But I went and I’m so glad I did.

I saw a sunrise I wasn’t supposed to see.
I danced (majestically, I might add) to music only I could hear.
I heard special messages celebrating 90 years of life that made me stop and reflect on my own.

I leaned into a wee bit of discomfort and walked away with one of the most meaningful mornings I’ve had in ages.
None of it would’ve happened if I’d waited to “feel like it.”

Action first. Feeling follows. Meaning stays.

The most meaningful parts of life rarely announce themselves in advance. They’re waiting on the other side of that first step.

Until next week.

Keep rolling.

Take Action in 3 Minutes

    1. Think of one thing you’ve been avoiding because you don’t “feel” like it yet.
    2. Do a small version of it right now. Start the workout, make the call, write the first sentence.

Let’s see what happens when you stop waiting for the mood to strike and start striking first.
