A weekly dose of ideas, insights, and simple action
Hey Rollers,
In The Office, there’s a scene where Dwight Schrute tries to get promoted by showing his boss, Michael Scott, a spreadsheet proving he’s never been late and never taken a single day off.
He doesn’t get the promotion.
Turns out, that’s not just a punchline. It’s exactly what the data tells us too.
So many of the people I work with fall into the same trap. We convince ourselves the world needs us more than it does and it holds us back.
There’s this quiet fear that if we take time off, everything will fall apart.
But it doesn’t have to be that way.
A client of mine in the U.S. just returned from two months of paternity leave. First thing he said to me?
“Justin, my team didn’t drop a single ball. I almost feel like they don’t need me.”
How rad is that?
If you plan properly, stepping away doesn’t cause collapse.
In fact, it might be the smartest move you make for your performance, your team’s growth, and your long-term success.
Time off isn’t a luxury. It’s fuel.
It’s as essential as that bowl of raw oats and goji berries you eat to start your day.
And the research backs it up.
According to Shawn Achor and Michelle Gielan in Harvard Business Review, more than 55% of Americans don’t use all their vacation time. In 2000, the average time off was three weeks. A couple of decades later, it’s just over two.
What really caught my eye though was this:
If you take 11 or more vacation days a year, you’re over 30% more likely to get a raise.
In other words:
Leaving leave on the table doesn’t prove you’re tough. It just slows you down.
White-knuckling your way through life might feel noble but it’s not sustainable.
Taking your well-deserved time off shows real courage.
It’s choosing trust. Trust in yourself, your team, and your systems.
Like all Smart Toughness, it’s not about pushing harder.
It’s about choosing what actually drives progress.
Already feeling resistance to the idea of some downtime?
That’s probably the clearest sign you need it.
Until next week, keep rolling.
