“Sometimes toughness isn’t about holding on. It’s about holding back.”

Hey Rollers,

People often tell me they wish they had more grit, more resilience, more fight.

But most of the time, they don’t need more grit, they just need more patience.

Patience turns the need to endure into the ability to wait.
It transforms toughness from a battle to survive into a posture to sustain.

I learned this first-hand during my Big Birthday Run earlier this year.

There were countless moments where it got tough – I was sore, tired, hungry, hot, or just over it. The more of these moments I faced, the more I realised they didn’t require heroics; they required patience.

A quiet kind of belief that said, this won’t last forever.

And guess what? It never did. Patience always rewarded me – with a shady seat, a fresh pair of socks, a cold drink, a handful of salty baby potatoes, or simply renewed spirits.

That run was the ultimate metaphor for what patience really is: faith in motion.

The Springboks are also masters of this and showed it again last night in their win over Les Bleus.

Their brand of patience has earned the nickname “slow poison.” They don’t panic when they’re behind. They trust the process, keep applying pressure, and play with faith. And more often than not, they win games in the last 15 or 20 minutes, not because they outmuscle the opposition, but because they outlast them.

Patience, in sport and in life, isn’t passive.
It’s persistence with composure.

It’s showing up again and again, trusting that momentum will do its work, even when the scoreboard doesn’t yet reflect it.

We live in a world that celebrates speed, but most meaningful things move at the pace of patience.

Progress is rarely explosive. It’s compound. It builds slowly, almost invisibly, and then, suddenly, it breaks through.

So the next time you find yourself frustrated by slow results or delayed outcomes, remember:

You don’t need to push harder.
You just need to wait better.

Because patience is the quiet form of toughness that separates those who start strong from those who finish stronger.

Until next week.

Keep rolling.

Now, instead of pushing, choose to trust.
Keep applying gentle pressure. Keep showing up.

Because slow poison always wins in the end.
