A weekly dose of ideas, insights, and simple action

Hey Rollers,

I’m 11 days post shoulder surgery, and while I’m still rocking a sling for a few more weeks, I’ve finally been cleared to work up a sweat again.

And honestly? It’s felt incredible.

Not because I’m suddenly in peak form again, but because sweating reminded me of something essential. I may not be 100%, but I’m moving and I’m back in the fight.

There’s something magical about a sweat-drenched workout. In the moment it can be horrible, but afterward the feeling of accomplishment is very real. And I believe the body has a memory of who we are and what we’re capable of just like the brain does.

So what is it about sweating (at the right time and in the right places – for anyone who has worn grey shirts or shorts you know what I’m talking about…) that is just so bloody marvellous?

The “Sweat High”: A Brain Boost

Pushing hard enough to sweat triggers a cascade of neurochemicals: endorphins, dopamine, serotonin, norepinephrine. The same stuff that reduces stress, lifts mood, and gives you that post-exercise buzz.

A good sweat literally changes your brain chemistry in the moment. It’s a natural high that leaves you calmer, more upbeat, and even a bit addicted (in a good way) to the experience.

Resilience Isn’t Built in the Boardroom

Every hard workout is a micro-proving ground. You meet resistance, and you push through it. That teaches your nervous system how to stay composed under stress.

It’s not just about fitness. It’s self-efficacy. Each time you finish something hard, you bank evidence that you can do hard things. That belief carries over into how you lead, how you parent, how you show up under pressure.

It’s the core idea behind Smart Toughness: by pushing yourself physically, you train your mind to believe in itself and persevere when things get tough professionally or personally. More than the belief alone you also have a growing stack of evidence of what you have done.

Endurance: The Sweet Taste of “Worth It”

There’s a unique pride that comes from doing something hard for a prolonged period of time. The high you feel afterward isn’t just endorphins, it’s the deep satisfaction of proving to yourself that you didn’t back down.

You learn that discomfort is temporary but the growth and confidence you get from overcoming it last far longer and translate into other areas of your life.

Tough workout in the morning. Tough conversation in the afternoon. You’re already warmed up for it.

Pushing your endurance makes you realise worth it > easy when it comes to personal growth.

The Smart Toughness Takeaway

Smart Toughness means knowing that discomfort and even pain isn’t always a red flag. Sometimes it’s a signal you’re stretching into something worthwhile.

So whatever “sweating” looks like for you this week, get after it. Sweat isn’t weakness leaving the body. It’s proof that you’re doing the work.

Until next week, keep sweating. Keep rolling.

Take Action in 3 Minutes

  1. Book a sweat session into your calendar this week.
  2. Block out at least 30 minutes.
  3. Make it count. Get uncomfortable on purpose. Your mind will thank you for it later.
